Understanding Caulking
Step #1. Let's Take a Look
The first step in sealing your home, your FREE estimate.
During your caulking estimate, your Timber Tight representative will walk through your space to inspect areas that need sealing and checks the condition of existing caulk. They take measurements, evaluate accessibility, and determine what materials and preparation the job will require. After assessing complexity - such as removal of old caulk or hard-to-reach areas - they explain your options and recommend the appropriate products. Finally, they provide a written estimate that outlines cost, timeline, and any warranty details.
Step #2. Prepping the Surface
You say jump, we ask how high.
A caulking company prepares surfaces by removing any old or failing caulk and thoroughly cleaning the area to eliminate dust, debris, soap scum, or loose material. Then they dry the surface completely and may use solvents or mildew-treating solutions if needed to ensure proper adhesion. Finally, they tape or mask edges to create clean lines and ensure the caulk bonds smoothly and evenly.
Step #3. Packing it in
We only use it if you need it, and you only need it if you haven't used it.
Backer rod fills deep gaps so the caulk sits at the correct depth, which helps it stretch and compress without cracking. It also creates a bond-breaker, ensuring the caulk adheres only to two sides instead of three, which improves flexibility and longevity. Additionally, it reduces the amount of caulk needed and helps create a cleaner, more uniform finish.
Step #4. Laying Caulk
This is what it's all about - precision bead, perfect seal.
Applying a caulking bead means running a continuous line of caulk along a joint, gap, or seam that needs to be sealed. The bead is dispensed from a caulking gun and guided steadily to create an even, consistent line. Once applied, it is typically smoothed with a finger or tool to ensure proper adhesion and a clean finish. This process helps create a durable, watertight, and airtight seal.
Step #5. Pooling & Tooling
The final step in your seamless finish, this is where bragging rights play a role.
Tooling in caulking means smoothing or shaping the freshly applied caulk bead to ensure it properly adheres to the surfaces. It helps press the caulk into the joint, remove excess material, and create a clean, professional-looking finish. This step also improves the seal's durability and overall performance.
Step #6. The Finish Line
The first step in sealing your home, and what that looks like.
A final caulking inspection involves checking all newly sealed areas to ensure the bead is smooth, properly adhered, and fully fills each joint without gaps or missed spots. The contractor confirms that excess caulk has been cleaned up and that the finish meets quality standards. They also verify that the correct materials were used for each area, such as waterproof or exterior-grade caulk where required. The warranty outlines what workmanship or material issues are covered and specifies how long the caulked areas are guaranteed to perform without failure.
